Gemini Diesel

Jetwhine's Scott Spangler managed to dig up another new entry in the Diesel aircraft engine market at Airventure. The Gemini 100 Diesel aircraft engine sports a very interesting implementation, with an opposed piston design. Which for you non-gearhead's means that two pistons share the same cylinder. Gemini has already gotten interest from Tecnam who'd like to put the engine in their P92 Eaglet.

I've been a believer before though... lured by the snappy CAD graphics and the promise of an affordable diesel engine. The folks at ZOCHE had me at radial, and then proceeded to let me down for about 6 Airventures in a row. So pardon me if I don't crack the champagne just yet...

Gemini diesel

Scott Spangler has commented that people have been trying to develop a workable aviation diesel since World War II. What he may have missed is that the Gemini diesel is a scaled-down version of the Junkers Jumo diesel engine developed in 1932 which flew successfully in a variety of aircraft for many years; it probably only "died" because of the development of turboprops and jets for commercial aircraft. So this basic design is tried and tested. Whether it can be successfully scaled down for LSAs remains to be seen. I suspect there are many who, like myself, would like to see it succeed.

And yet, I'll keep my fingers crossed...

...an LSA diesel would be outstanding! I've been wondering for a while why Rotax and Jabiru haven't already tried this. Sure it's nice that they can run on certain blends automotive gasoline, but that's tough to find without ethanol and tough to find at an airport at all. I hope things work out for the Gemini.
