Growing Pains for Indian Aviation

With business going well and aviation booming for India, the government decided to build new airports in Bangalore and Hyderabad. These modern airports will be able to deal with many types of aircraft and large volumes of passengers. Ironically though, Indian civil aviation minister Praful Patel announced today that the opening of the new Bangalore airport will be delayed for a month because roads from the city to the airport are in poor condition.
That's not the only problem affecting Bangalore's readiness though. The Hindu Business Line also mentions that more time is required to train the airport's air traffic controllers.
That's not the end of it either though: as the government along with several private firms work to get these new airports running, employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are planning a strike to protest the closing of the old airports in these cities in conjunction with the opening of the new ones.
I admire India's current enthusiasm for aviation and I wish more Americans could feel some of that energy. It looks as though India might have the cart slightly ahead of the horse for the moment. However, I trust that things will get straightened out and when they do India's investments in aviation will pay enormous dividends.
