SkyCatcher Crashes Adds to Rough Weekend for Aviation

Jason — Sat, 09/20/2008 - 23:26

Both Aviation Week and the Wichita Eagle report that one of Cessna's C-162 SkyCatcher prototypes crashed yesterday. Thankfully, the test pilot was able to parachute to safety.

The FAA's preliminary report states that the pilot bailed-out when the aircraft entered an uncontrollable spin. It isn't clear yet whether he was conducting spin testing or if the maneuver was unintentional.

Nasty spin characteristics are not the sort of thing you want...especially for an aircraft operated by low-time student and sport pilots. Cessna is going to continue with production of the SkyCatcher, but initial deliveries could be delayed if they need to make changes to prevent this type of spin from developing again. I know at least one case where changes like this were relative simple to make. Hopefully, the same is true for Cessna's LSA.
