Heavier Lift UAV
Urban Aeronautics is testing a pretty kick ass UAV that departs from your average recce platform. This unmanned machine boasts a 100kt cruise with a 700lb useful load. That's more carrying capacity than almost all of the LSA's we've seen to date, and this thing can take off vertically. Yup, ducted fan and all, this beast or mule in this case is a VTOL UAV.
Besides being a pretty cool advancement in technology, this represents an entirely new capability for UAV's. So far UAV's have had a pretty limited interaction with folks on the ground. Having a cargo capability implies landing somewhere other than the airfield where the Mule originated its mission. This means putting down in the field somewhere, probably nearby to the folks that need that cargo. It will be interesting to see how this new employment concept is accepted by the community. Would you trust something landing nearby without a pilot?
