GA Betrayed?
I am very disappointed to report that in spite of an FAA policy announcement that I considered to close the debate on user fees, the AOPA reports that President Barack Obama is including user fees in his proposed budget.
No matter how you may have voted, I think we can all agree that the President is working to do his best for America so far. Unfortunately, his support of General Aviation User Fees shows that he is missing part of the picture. He seems like too smart a person to be seduced by the faulty arguments in favor of user fees. He's spoken a lot about wanting to get away from bad policies of past administrations; I hope he will realize that user fees stand at the forefront of those policies. It seems to me that perhaps he's been misinformed by advisers who don't have the whole picture themselves.
President Obama even had a Pilots for Obama group during his campaign. I wonder how they feel about this announcement. I hope they feel that it's a bad idea like the rest of us do and let him know about it.
It looks like the debate for user fees is, once again, far from over. Don't stop letting your representatives know how you feel about how wrong user fees are. America's new President is all about "Change You Can Believe In." Let's make sure we get to see a change in government's acceptance of bad ideas like GA user fees!
