Anybody Want to Go In With Me?

Jason — Thu, 01/28/2010 - 06:42

As mentioned by articles on CNN and Wired, the most famous Airbus A320 in the world is up for auction. That's right, Chartis Insurance now owns the aircraft that Captain Sully Sullenberger landed on the Hudson River as US Airways Flight 1549. It's totaled and they're selling it basically as scrap to see what they can get. So, anyone want to get together and buy it with me?

I imagine that just as scrap aluminum it'd be worth a lot. Plus, some of the seats might still be usable along with some of the expensive avionics up front. Another (and probably better) option would be to take advantage of the historical significance of the plane in some way. It could be donated to a museum or turned into a museum itself.

Personally, I think it'd be perfect as a restaurant. There's a precedent for this: Solos Restaurant in Colorado Springs, CO, is an old Air Force KC-97. It's surprisingly roomy inside and the food there is great. It's a fun destination for pilots and non-pilots. Imagine this A320 sitting as a restaurant on the bank of the Hudson next to the spot where Flight 1549 landed. You'd definitely have to name the restaurant Sully's. With all the people that travel from all over the world to visit New York, I can't imagine there'd ever be a shortage of customers.

The auction goes until March 27th at 4:30pm, so there's still plenty of time to come up with funding. The only problem is that it's for sale "AS IS/WHERE IS" and it'll probably cost as much to move it as it will to buy it. Given the potential that this plane has though, it could definitely be worth the investment.

Needs to be part of a Museum

Jon — Sat, 01/30/2010 - 17:09

There are far to few heroes today, we need to honor and revere those that optimized the best values of America. I think the fuselage of the airplane should be part of the United States Air Force Academy museum to set forth a great example of one of their graduates or part of the Smithsonian collection to demonstrate great aviation savvy. I'd be willing to put my money where my mouth is- given acceptance from one of the organizations.
