Centurion 2.0s Adds 20hp, Keeps Kerosene C-172 Option Open
Do you remember when Thielert Aircraft Enginges GmbH declared insolvency and caused major headaches for owners of DA-42 Twin Stars, DA-40 TDI Stars and C-172TDs? It wasn't all bad; the problem led Diamond to produce their own series of Austro engines that offer more power and similar economy as Thielert's engines. However, Centurion Engines has been working to get the company out of insolvency and it appears they may be making progress.
According to the AOPA and Centurion, the EASA just approved an STC for the new Centurion 2.0s engine in C-172 aircraft. STCs for the Robin DR400 Ecoflyer and Diamond DA40 TDI are supposed to be on their way as well.
This is really good news all around. The fact that Centurion is continuing to develop and sell good products will help the company recover. The new 2.0s model offers 20 more horse power than the old 2.0 did. I'd heard some complaints that the old version left Skyhawks underpowered, so the extra power will definitely help. There are a lot of airplanes out there with Centurion 2.0 engines who haven't had a decent overhaul or replacement option for a while. It sounds like they'll be able to stop sweating soon.
The fact that this engine burns kerosene rather than 100LL avgas is definitely important. Whether you live in the US where avgas may simply become scarce or you're flying in Europe where you may be penalized for burning 100LL, airplanes burning kerosene are better for everyone.
Though they sound somewhat focused on the European market, I expect that we'll hear about a push toward FAA certification before too long. Good work Centurion for making something out of the mess that was handed to you. I hope things continue to go well!
