DC-3: Getting Excited for Oshkosh!

One of my favorite acts at Thunder in the Valley was a DC-3, N143D. It was gorgeous looking, appeared well maintained, and it was given a position of honor at show center. I've always loved the DC-3 and enjoyed watching this one fly.

The act included a huge puff of white smoke as each radial started and began to produce that characteristic rumble we all love. It made several passes across show center and made surprisingly tight turns between passes. It finished by making a very high-tailed wheel landing in a challenging, gusty quartering tailwind and taxiing back with a US flag proudly displayed from the cockpit.

It was interesting to me that this particular aircraft is owned by none other than Herpa Miniature Models. It seems cute to me that a company who specializes in miniature aircraft models has a real-live plane as its mascot/advertising ambassador. If the care of their DC-3 is any reflection of the care they put into their models, they must offer great products!

If you'd like to see this plane, but missed Thunder in the Valley, don't worry. N143D will join over 40 other DC-3 and C-47 aircraft (and one DC-2) in a formation arrival to Oshkosh this year. The formation is being organized by a group called TheLastTime.org and it looks like they're doing a great job of talking the event up.

Of all the formation arrivals I would look forward to at Oshkosh, this would definitely be the one. If nothing else, the air show this weekend definitely got me excited for Air Venture!
