According to the EAA and others, Flight Design, the market leader among Light Sport Aircraft, just announced plans to build a 4-place aircraft. This in an impressive move on many levels and I'm excited to see what they come up with.

A few companies share the vast majority of the LSA market. Competition at the top is fierce and everyone else is struggling a bit to survive. In most cases, it's all a company can do to produce and sell one model, or a couple variations on one theme. Flight Design has lead the pack from the start and seems to make great aircraft. (Note to self: find a dealer or local owner and get a demo flight!) The fact that they can expand not only beyond their basic model, but into an entirely different category implies that they're doing pretty well.

That being said, it's one thing to stride out in front of a bunch of upstart LSA companies while it's an entirely different matter to go up against the big names like Cessna, Piper, Diamond, Cirrus and others in the Normal category 4-place piston market.

4-place single has been done over and over again. The C-172 and Piper PA-28 series aren't especially exciting, but they're proven stalwarts at the low end of the market. Varying combinations of design, power and materials allow progressively faster (and more expensive) options such as: Diamond's DA-40, the Mooney M20, Cessna's Corvalis series, the Cirrus SR22 and more. So, what's Flight Design's angle on this market?

I browsed through the CT Flier forums and saw some interesting ideas. The discussion there reminded me that Flight Design made a big deal last year about a hybrid electric aircraft motor setup they're working on. It uses a supercharged 115 hp Rotax 914 engine paired with a 40 hp electric motor. A single lever in the cockpit commands them to work together to provide power for takeoff and climb, while the Rotax handles cruising all by itself. The press release even mentioned that this setup was planned for an eventual 4-place aircraft.

With only 155 hp max available, I doubt Flight Design hopes to keep up with the Cessna 400 or SR22 on speed. However, Flight Design's LSAs are very fuel efficient, and I expect that will hold true for their new airplane. They could definitely have a great option for a green 4-place aircraft. I'm not sure about the 914, but the other Rotax engines are unleaded friendly - another bonus for the environmentally conscious pilot. Flight Design's LSAs are also very roomy. It'd be nice if their 4-place could offer a cabin that's truly comfortable for everyone inside.

Though far from an official estimate, one member of the CT Flier Forums also suggested a possible purchase price for this plane that would give it a significant advantage in its market.

I'm glad that things are going well enough for Flight Design that they can take this step and I'm excited to see what they end up offering. If their other products are any indication, it should be a great airplane that shakes up an already very competitive market. Maybe we'll get to see it at Oshkosh....
