Commercial sUAS? It's Easy! Just Do It!

If you've been reading AviationBull for a while, you'll know that I'm not the biggest fan of drones. (We're going to call them unmanned aerial systems, or UAS, for the rest of this post because that's the term the FAA's going with.) I've narrowly avoided a couple near midair collisions with UAS in Afghanistan that would have killed me and my crew if not for our actions. Despite the dangers inherent with UAS, they are the way of the future. There is no stopping that.

New USAF Pilot Bonus - Too Little Too Late?

It seems that I hit a nerve when I recently compared pay between military and airline pilots. The story has been read more than 33,000 times to date and I've received numerous follow-up questions. Now, thanks to a recent Air Force Times article, there's a new perturbation in this discussion.

Evolution Aircraft - Future Powerhouse or The Next Columbia?

There is no arguing that the Lancair Evolution is a gorgeous, impressive aircraft. It's fast, has long legs, and has more useful load than just about any other 4-place out there. It's an experimental meaning it gives its owner access to the best of cutting-edge technology at the best possible prices, much of which isn't even an option for certified aircraft. Knowing all that, it makes some sense that Lancair has decided to split the Evolution off from all other Lancair models and form a separate company around just that model.

Two Solar Aircraft Make History in One Week

Last week the
Solar Impulse 2 completed it's around-the-world flight
. This was a historic accomplishment for aviation...they made the entire flight using solar energy. I've been writing about this project since 2009 and it's awesome to finally see it completed. Congratulations to the Solar Impulse team!

Stratus ESG - Finally ADS-B for the Masses?

We've written here a lot about the looming mandate that starting in 2020, any aircraft flying in Classes A, B, C, D airspace, or Class E above 10,000 must be equipped with an ADS-B Out transponder. There's good and bad to this system, but one of the biggest problems has been a lack of affordable ADS-B transponders on the market. The Stratus ESG and ESGi from AppAero may have finally solved that problem for the masses!

Avidyne ADS-B Deals Beat FAA Rebate

I recently wrote that the FAA is offering a $500 rebate for 20,000 aircraft owners to install ADS-B in their aircraft. That's a great deal, but there is more than a little headache involved. The program doesn't even start for a couple months, you have to run through a bunch of Federales Against Aviation brand red tape, and it's sort of a lottery - there's no guarantee you'll actually be selected for this program. Thankfully, our neighborhood avionics company Avidyne has an even better offer.
