Update: GA's Place in Presidental Platforms
Jason — Tue, 08/26/2008 - 20:53
Just before the US Presidental primaries, I posted an overview of what I had been able to find about the Presidental candidates and their stances on GA. The recent hype over the political party conventions got me wondering if any more information had been made available. Here is what I've found so far:

In general, is flying an experimental aircraft more likely to result in an accident than flying a factory built aircraft?

How Do You Feel About Experimental Aircraft?
Jason — Sun, 08/24/2008 - 16:29
Yesterday morning, an experimental Velocity 173 RG crashed into a Las Vegas home, killing the pilot and two people in the building. We hate to hear about accidents like this and express our sympathy to those affected by this tragedy.
In the wake of this incident, some news agencies such as:Las Vegas Channel 8 and the Las Vegas Review Journal seem to be attacking experimental aviation, or even general aviation altogether.

More VLJ Company Layoffs
Jason — Sun, 08/24/2008 - 15:54
I hate it when there is an over-abundance of bad news to report. As if Eclipse wasn't worrying me enough, TMCNET.com just published an article about how Eclipse laying off 600 workers signals changes that could threaten Albuquerque's entire economy.

9 United Airlines aircraft were grounded on on Tuesday when a TSA inspector used a Total Air Temperature (TAT) probe as a step to gain access to an airliner. The inspector was spotted in the act, forcing additional inspections prior to the potentially damaged aircraft re-entering service. Needless to say, United was less than happy, however, the TSA was quick to retaliate stating that the airline had failed to properly secure its aircraft.

Some Effects of Washington DC ADIZ Extended for 60 Miles
Jason — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 14:31
The AOPA wrote yesterday about a new rule relating to the Washington DC ADIZ. This rule requires any pilot who flies VFR within 60 nm of the ADIZ boundaries to take a mandatory training course. Apparently, this includes 117 airports and 142,000 cubic miles of airspace. Are you a student pilot at an airport 90 miles West of Washington who plans to never get anywhere near the ADIZ? You'd better get your training done, or else. Do you fly gliders 90 miles North of Washington and always work further North or West? Too bad, you have to complete the training as well.

Eclipse - Unraveling or Regrouping?
Jason — Wed, 08/20/2008 - 13:06
I was surprised and not altogether pleased to hear earlier this summer that Eclipse Aviation CEO Vern Raburn had relinquished his position as part of a deal to secure more funding for his company. I've remained optimistic that things would still work out for Eclipse, but I just came across a few facts that worry me a bit.
